Aden, Yemen – The Yemeni government has expressed grave concern about the potential for a major environmental catastrophe in the Red Sea following a Houthi attack on a commercial vessel carrying dangerous chemicals.
The ship, identified as the “Rubimar,” was reportedly en route from the United Arab Emirates to Bulgaria when it came under attack by Houthi rebels.
The Yemeni government claims the attack has placed the Red Sea ecosystem at significant risk due to the potential release of hazardous materials, including fertilizers and oil, onboard the vessel.
“We are deeply concerned about the potential environmental consequences of this attack,” said a Yemeni government spokesperson. “The release of these chemicals into the Red Sea could have a devastating impact on marine life and coastal communities.”
The Yemeni government has established a committee to investigate the incident and develop an emergency plan to mitigate the environmental threat.
They have also called upon the international community, including environmental organizations, to provide urgent assistance in addressing the situation.
“We urge the international community to join us in preventing this environmental disaster,” the spokesperson added. “Immediate action is needed to contain the potential spill and prevent these dangerous chemicals from entering the Red Sea.”
The incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with the conflict in Yemen and its potential to cause widespread environmental damage.
The international community is urged to take immediate action to support the Yemeni government’s efforts to prevent an ecological catastrophe in the Red Sea.
