Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The World Black People’s Center has elected its leadership and outlined its goals to become the premier platform for showcasing the history, culture, heritage, and development of Black people around the world.
Demeke Mekonnen, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, was elected President of the Center’s General Council during the organization’s first conference held in Addis Ababa.
“The World Black People’s Center should work to become the preferred platform to highlight the history, culture, heritage and development of the black people,” Mekonnen stated.
Other key leadership positions were filled, including Robbie Walker and Sylvia Nkanyuza as Vice Presidents and Tsgaye Xeman as General Secretary. Notably, Julius Garvey, son of the renowned Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey, was elected as the Center’s head.
The establishment of the Center emphasizes the importance of preserving and protecting Black heritage, particularly African heritage. Mekonnen highlighted the need for collaboration among African scholars to educate the world about African history and ensure its rightful place in educational curriculums.
Sustainable financial resources and collaboration with various stakeholders were identified as crucial for the Center’s success. Organizing events that showcase Black history, artifacts, and artwork are also planned activities.
Dr. Julius Garvey further emphasized the need for Africa to adopt a new approach to become more competitive on the global stage.
