Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced an additional $80 million in humanitarian assistance for Ethiopia today. This funding aims to alleviate the suffering of millions affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Sonali Korde, Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, made the announcement during a press briefing at the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa. Her visit to the Afar and Tigray regions informed this decision, highlighting the dire situation on the ground.

The United Nations estimates over 21 million Ethiopians require humanitarian assistance in 2024 due to conflict, climate shocks, and widespread insecurity.

USAID, alongside partners, has distributed food to 2.4 million people in January alone since resuming food assistance late last year. Korde emphasized the critical need for continued support, having witnessed firsthand the struggles of communities recovering from conflict and drought.
The looming threat of famine was also addressed. While acknowledging the potential for worsening conditions, Korde pointed out the lack of current data to confirm a famine.

This additional funding will bolster USAID’s efforts to combat malnutrition. The agency aims to treat and prevent acute malnutrition in over 1.5 million children under five and assist over 600,000 pregnant and nursing mothers this year.

USAID will continue its existing programs focused on food security, healthcare, and other vital services, striving to reach at least 4.5 million people across eight Ethiopian regions.

USAID resumed food assistance in November 2023 following comprehensive reforms implemented by the Ethiopian government and humanitarian partners. These reforms addressed concerns about aid diversion that had previously led to a six-month suspension.

This renewed commitment by USAID demonstrates the ongoing effort to provide life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations in Ethiopia.
