Mekelle, Ethiopia – US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Mike Hammer urged the withdrawal of “non-ENDF” forces from Tigray during a visit to the regional capital Mekelle. He met with Tigray interim administration officials, including President Getachew Reda, and emphasized the need for full implementation of the Pretoria peace agreement.
Hammer commended the Tigray administration for its commitment to the deal but stressed the importance of non-ENDF forces, likely referring to Eritrean troops, leaving the region. He also acknowledged the difficult situation of internally displaced people (IDPs) and called for their swift return home.
US Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga accompanied Hammer and met with Tigray officials and opposition party leaders. They discussed the progress of the peace agreement and the humanitarian crisis in the region, particularly the plight of IDPs and victims of sexual violence.
This visit highlights the ongoing international efforts to ensure the success of the Pretoria agreement and bring an end to the Tigray conflict. The withdrawal of non-ENDF forces remains a key sticking point, and Hammer’s visit underscores the US commitment to resolving this issue.
