Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The United States Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin J. Masinga, urged for a nationwide ceasefire in Ethiopia to end the ongoing conflict.
Ambassador Masinga made the call in a speech on May 14, 2024, in Addis Ababa. He condemned the violence and urged all parties involved to engage in dialogue and respect human rights.
“We are deeply saddened to see reports of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, forced abductions, conflict-related sexual violence and other attacks on civilians across the country,” Ambassador Masinga said.
He called on the Ethiopian government and armed groups, including the Fano and the Oromo Liberation Army, to halt their fighting and engage in peace talks.
The United States Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Mike Hamer, also echoed the call for peace.
He reminded Ethiopians that the country is suffering from internal conflicts and urged the government to refrain from using force as a solution.
Ambassador Masinga urged all parties to focus on dialogue and take advantage of the opportunity for national consultation. He also called for an end to targeting schools, health facilities, and water infrastructure, and for unrestricted humanitarian access
