United Nations – The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, urged the international community to take immediate action to stop the ongoing war in Sudan, describing it as “horrible” and emphasizing the urgent need for peace.
Guterres stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict, which began in April 2023 between forces supporting rival generals.
He called on the warring parties, led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, to engage in dialogue and end the violence.
The conflict has resulted in at least 12,000 deaths and displaced over 7 million people.
Guterres expressed hope for coordinated efforts with regional groups and the African Union to achieve a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid to the struggling population.
He emphasized the desperate situation of millions of Sudanese citizens caught in the conflict, requiring immediate humanitarian assistance.
The secretary general highlighted the upcoming African Union summit as a potential opportunity to bring the warring parties together and pave the way for peace talks.
