Addis Abab, Ethiopia – The United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, announced the allocation of $17 million to address the worsening food insecurity crisis in Ethiopia. This allocation reflects growing concerns about the impact of the El NiƱo-induced drought, which is causing severe hardship in the Afar, Amhara, and Tigray regions.

The situation is expected to worsen in the coming months, with over 10 million Ethiopians projected to require food assistance during the peak lean season between July and September.

The ongoing conflict and previous droughts continue to exacerbate the crisis, while potential flooding raises further concerns.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) emphasizes the limited window of opportunity to prevent the worst-case scenario, highlighting the need for swift action and additional funding.
OCHA acknowledges that $17 million is insufficient and urges further support from donors to address the growing crisis.
