Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) Central Committee announced today that it has expelled two of its members, Keria Ibrahim and Mulu G/Egziabher, accusing them of surrendering to the Ethiopian federal government during the recent war in Tigray.
Both women held high positions in the federal government before the war, with Ibrahim serving as the Speaker of the Federation Council and Mulu G/Egziabher as the Minister of Transport. They were captured by the federal forces when the war escalated and were later released following the Pretoria Agreement ceasefire.
According to a TPLF statement, the decision to expel Ibrahim and Mulu G/Egziabher was made after a Central Committee meeting on February 14th. The statement accuses them of “surrendering to the enemy and betraying secrets,” violating party rules.
This news comes amid ongoing tensions between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF following the two-year long conflict in Tigray. The Pretoria Agreement, signed in November 2022, called for a cessation of hostilities and the disarmament of both sides, but tensions remain high and accusations of human rights abuses continue.
The expulsion of Ibrahim and G/Egziabher is likely to further strain relations between the two parties and raise concerns about the future of the peace process.
