Tigray, Ethiopia – The Tigray Interim Administration announced it will only engage with the Ethiopian federal government regarding the peace agreement signed in November 2022 through the African Union (AU).

This decision comes after a meeting of the Tigray cabinet on Wednesday. The administration says it remains committed to peaceful conflict resolution and resolving territorial disputes as outlined in the agreement.
The Tigray administration emphasized the importance of upholding Tigray’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of external forces, and the return of displaced people to their homes. They also clarified that no separate agreement has been reached with the federal government on implementation.

This announcement follows recent tensions between the two sides regarding the full implementation of the peace agreement, including the status of the disputed Western Tigray region and the response to the ongoing drought.

The Tigray administration had previously met with federal officials in February to discuss progress on the agreement, but they disagree on the feasibility of holding a referendum in Western Tigray due to the displaced population.

The latest development indicates the Tigray administration’s preference for AU mediation in the ongoing peace process.
