Tigray, Ethiopia – In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Health Office of the Tigray Interim Administration, and Light for the World, a humanitarian organization, a second round of trachoma vaccinations has begun in the Tigray region.
The campaign aims to reach 2.6 million people and is part of a national effort to eliminate trachoma as a public health concern.
“This vaccination program is crucial in protecting our communities, especially children, from the devastating effects of trachoma,” said Ato Aregai Gebremedh, head of the disease prevention and control team of the regional temporary administration health office.
Trachoma, an infectious disease primarily caused by poor hygiene, can lead to blindness if left untreated. The campaign emphasizes the importance of public education alongside vaccination efforts to combat the spread of the disease.
This initiative builds upon the success of the first round, which vaccinated over one million individuals. It reflects Ethiopia’s ongoing commitment to addressing neglected tropical diseases and ensuring the health and well-being of its citizens
