Adigrat, Tigray – The Tigray Orthodox Tewahedo Church has donated over 3.8 million birr worth of grain to help residents of Adigrat, a city facing a severe social crisis due to war and drought.
The aid, distributed through the Menbere Selama Kasate Birhan ane that emergency aid will benefit 5,000 poor residents and displaced persons in the city.
“This is a much-needed donation that will bring relief to many suffering families,” said Berhe Arkebe, a member of the logistics team for the aid distribution. “We are grateful to the Tigrayan community and friends of Tigray for their generosity.”
The donation comes as Adigrat grapples with the aftermath of the Tigray War, which has displaced millions of people and caused widespread food insecurity. The city is also facing a severe drought, which has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.
The Mayor of Adigrat, Solomon Hagos, praised the Tigray Orthodox Church for its support. “This donation is a testament to the compassion and solidarity of the Tigrayan people,” he said. “We call on others to follow their example and help us rebuild our city.”
This is not the first time the Tigray Orthodox Church has provided assistance to those in need. The church has a long history of humanitarian work, and it continues to play a vital role in supporting communities affected by conflict and disaster.
