Adwa, Ethiopia – Dr. Atsbeha G. Egzabher, Head of the Tigray Bureau of Culture and Tourism, emphasized that the 128th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa commemorates a long history of Tigrayan resistance against foreign invaders.
He highlighted previous battles like Dogali and Gurah, stating, “They faced them and kept their freedom, not submissive.”
Dr. Egzabher acknowledged the significant role Tigrayans played in the Adwa victory and called for recognizing their contribution. He emphasized that while celebrating the victory, one cannot ignore current challenges.
He stated, “It is also a holiday that we are celebrating with many sufferings under the sky.”
Looking ahead, he proposed using the anniversary as a platform for planning future development projects and leveraging Tigray’s potential. He stressed the importance of unity and stated, “It is a time to ensure our harmony and unity.”
Adwa Mayor, Yohannes Gebreamlak, echoed the call for unity and advocated for efforts to restore displaced people and regain unreturned land. He emphasized the need for a celebration that reflects accurate history and fosters development in the region.
This year’s commemoration theme, “Hasab for Peace, Unity and Prosperity of Tigray,” reflects the desire for both celebrating past triumphs and addressing current challenges for a brighter future.
