Mekelle, Ethiopia – The Tigray Interim Administration held a crucial meeting on February 20th, 2016, to discuss the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement. This peace deal, signed recently, aims to bring an end to the conflict in the region.
The administration prioritized maintaining the progress made towards peace and ensuring its security. Achieving lasting peace, they emphasized, requires respecting Tigray’s constitutional borders, withdrawing external forces from the region, and enabling the safe return of displaced people.
The issue of Tigray’s borders received significant attention. The administration affirmed their efforts to resolve the matter as per the Pretoria Agreement and the Ethiopian constitution. They firmly opposed any unilateral actions that exert undue pressure on the Tigrayan people.
Expressing their commitment to the peace process, the administration declared their readiness to fully implement the Pretoria Agreement and called for the immediate commencement of work by the African Union panel.
They also acknowledged ongoing collaboration with the federal government in addressing issues and building trust.
Beyond the agreement’s implementation, the meeting addressed the situation of the Tigray army.
The administration vehemently condemned any “slander and accusations” against the army, asserting such actions are unacceptable and constitute an attack on the Tigrayan people. Further, they pledged to no longer remain silent in the face of such accusations, highlighting their commitment to defending the Tigray army’s reputation.
This meeting by the Tigray Interim Administration signifies their determination to achieve and maintain peace in the region while safeguarding the interests of the Tigrayan people.
They emphasize adherence to the peace agreement, address territorial concerns, and pledge to defend the Tigray army against external criticism.
