Addis Abab, Ethiopia – Today, on the 128th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa, Tigray officials called for increased research and documentation of the historical event, while also emphasizing the importance of unity and stability in the region.
Lt. Gen. Tadesse Woreda, vice president of the Tigray Interim Administration, stressed the need for further exploration and documentation of the Adwa War. “The Adwa war is a history that should be researched and documented a lot,” he added.
Redae Halefo, Head of Communication Affairs for the Tigray Interim Administration, on his behalf stated that the anniversary should be a time to “strengthen unity and create a stable basis for lasting solutions to the problems of the people of Tigray.”
The Battle of Adwa, fought on March 1, 1896, saw the Ethiopian army decisively defeat an invading Italian force.
This victory marked a significant turning point in African history, as it was one of the few instances where a European colonial power was defeated by an African nation.
The anniversary of the Battle of Adwa remains a significant event in Ethiopia, particularly in the Tigray region, where the battle took place.
