30 March 2024
Addis Abab, Ethiopia – In a message addressed to the U.S. Senate Committee on Human Rights and the Secretary of State, a group advocating for peace in Tigray has emphasized the importance of fully implementing the Pretoria Agreement.

The agreement, signed in November 2023, aims to end the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region. The message, delivered in the Tigrinya language and translated for wider audiences, expresses the group’s commitment to contributing to lasting peace.

“Full implementation of this agreement is paramount to securing lasting peace for the people of Tigray,” the message states. The group, whose identities are not immediately known, goes on to offer humanitarian assistance and support for the recognition of Tigray’s sovereign territory “should the situation allow.”

The message also mentions a pledge to back efforts for regional restoration and security.

The Tigray War, which began in November 2020, has caused a humanitarian crisis in the region. The international community has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
