Khartoum, Sudan – Sudan’s leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has linked his acceptance of solutions proposed by the African Union (AU) to resolve the country’s crisis with the reinstatement of Sudan’s full membership in the AU. This comes after the AU suspended Sudan’s membership following the October 2021 military takeover.
During a meeting with a high-level AU delegation on Sunday, al-Burhan expressed confidence in the potential of the AU’s solutions, but only if Sudan is treated as a full member state again. He argued that the October events were not a coup but rather a dissolution of the previous military-civilian partnership.
The AU delegation, led by Mohamed Ibn Chambas, reiterated the organization’s commitment to ending the conflict in Sudan and achieving stability. Chambas has been engaging with various Sudanese political stakeholders as part of the AU’s efforts to facilitate dialogue, restore constitutional order, and achieve lasting peace, as established in January 2024.
