Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A new monument honoring former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere was unveiled today at the headquarters of the African Union (AU).
Nyerere, widely considered one of the founding fathers of modern Africa, is celebrated for his contributions to the continent’s unity, freedom, and development.
The inauguration ceremony, held in front of the AU’s Office of African Peace and Security, was attended by high-profile dignitaries including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Representatives from various African nations, regional institutions, and other guests also joined the momentous occasion.
The statue serves as a lasting tribute to Nyerere’s legacy, which includes leading Tanzania to independence, advocating for pan-Africanism, and championing socialist ideals aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens. His philosophy of “Ujamaa” (familyhood) emphasized cooperation and communal solidarity, leaving a lasting mark on Tanzania’s development trajectory.
Nyerere’s unwavering commitment to peace and human rights earned him international respect. He played a pivotal role in mediating conflicts within Africa and beyond, contributing significantly to the liberation struggles of several countries.
The new monument stands as a powerful symbol of his dedication to these principles and serves as an inspiration for future generations of African leaders.
