Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali government has strongly condemned what it calls a “provocative attempt” by Ethiopia to block its President from attending the 2024 African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.
In a press statement released on February 17th, the Federal Republic of Somalia accused Ethiopian security forces of obstructing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s delegation from entering the AU headquarters. The statement described the incident as a breach of diplomatic norms and international protocols, undermining the established traditions of the African Union.
Somalia further denounced Ethiopia’s “growing list of erratic actions” and questioned the suitability of Addis Ababa as the AU’s headquarters. The statement highlighted the responsibility of the host nation to treat all African leaders equally and uphold the honor of hosting the continental body. It warned that the AU may need to consider relocating its headquarters if Ethiopia fails to fulfill its obligations.
The Somali government also called for an urgent and independent investigation by the AU into the alleged incident.
Ethiopia, however, denied the accusations, claiming the Somali delegation’s security detail attempted to enter the venue with weapons, violating established protocols.
Tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia have been simmering for some time, particularly over a maritime deal Ethiopia signed with the breakaway region of Somaliland, which Somalia considers its territory. This latest incident is likely to further strain relations between the two East African nations.
