Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has landed in Addis Ababa to participate in the 37th African Union Summit (AU) taking place on February 17-18. Welcomed by Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Mohamud is expected to hold bilateral meetings with other leaders and discuss key issues for the continent.
The President will engage with other heads of state and government, forging partnerships and addressing shared interests. No specific mentions of Ethiopian talks were made.
Mohamud will advocate for collaboration in countering security threats, promoting economic growth, and tackling climate change.
He will emphasize Somalia’s commitment to respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, promoting peace and development across Africa.
The speech is expected to reiterate Somalia’s opposition to the Ethiopia-Somaliland MoU, emphasizing its infringement on Somali sovereignty and the need for international law compliance.
The visit comes amidst tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia regarding the MoU with Somaliland. Somalia views the agreement as a violation of its territory and has recalled its ambassador.
