Asmara, Eritrea – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Eritrea’s capital Asmara on Sunday, March 8th, 2024, for a two-day working visit. This marks his second trip to Asmara in just two months.
The Eritrean Minister of Information, Yemane Gebre Meskel (Mane Gebre Kress is the former Information Minister), announced the visit on his social media page.
The purpose of the visit remains undisclosed, though it comes amid heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa.
President Mohamud’s visit follows Ethiopia’s controversial December 2016 agreement with Somaliland, a breakaway region that Somalia claims as part of its territory.
The agreement granted Somaliland access to Ethiopian ports and recognition of its citizens’ nationality, angering Somalia.
In response, President Mohamud has embarked on a diplomatic tour, seeking support from regional powers.
Eritrea was his first destination following the signing, and his current visit comes amidst signs of a cooling relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia after their cooperation in the Tigray War.
Discussions with Eritrea Remain Unclear
The specific topics President Mohamud will address during his visit are unknown.
However, his previous visits during President Farmajo’s administration focused on securing the return of Somali soldiers sent to Eritrea for training. The number of these soldiers and their current status remain unclear.
President Mohamud’s visit to Eritrea highlights the complex diplomatic landscape of the Horn of Africa. Somalia seeks allies in its dispute with Somaliland, while Eritrea’s relationship with Ethiopia remains uncertain.
The coming days may reveal more details about the discussions between the Somali and Eritrean leaders.
