Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Education officials in the Amhara region of Ethiopia report that over 3,000 schools remain closed due to ongoing security concerns. This affects an estimated 6.2 million students, hindering their access to education in the 2024 school year.
The Deputy Head of the Regional Education Bureau, Mr. Adame, announced that while efforts are underway to resume classes in more stable areas, the ongoing security situation poses a significant challenge.
“We are working to start education in the relatively peaceful areas,” Mr. Adame stated during a consultation forum with education leaders in Bahir Dar city.
However, he cautioned that 3,225 schools, including 3,000 primary and 225 secondary schools, remain closed due to safety risks.
The regional education office is urging parents to send their children to school wherever possible, highlighting the importance of ensuring continued education despite the challenges.
This news reflects the ongoing impact of security issues on education in Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara region. With a significant number of schools closed and millions of students unable to attend classes, concerns are rising about the potential long-term effects on educational attainment and the future of children in the region.
