Ethiopia’s universities are calling on scholars to play a more active role in peacebuilding following the conflict in the northern regions.

Leaders from Tigray, Amhara, and Afar universities met over the weekend, acknowledging criticisms that some academics failed to promote peace during the war.

The Ministry of Peace is encouraging universities to take the lead in reconciliation efforts, while Mekelle University hosted a conference on “Building peace in Ethiopia.” Analysts, however, point out that some scholars were part of the problem, and consequences may follow.
