Nairobi, Kenya – In a significant development for the Horn of Africa, Kenyan President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed agreed to uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African nations.
During their meeting in Nairobi on Wednesday, the two leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, security, and stability across the continent as essential factors for economic growth and development.
They affirmed their commitment to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African states, rejecting unconstitutional changes of government, and opposing external interference in domestic political processes
This declaration holds particular significance for Ethiopia, facing internal conflicts and international criticism regarding human rights concerns. While the joint statement doesn’t explicitly mention the Somalia-Ethiopia dispute, it comes amidst tensions surrounding Ethiopia’s MoU with the breakaway region of Somaliland. Somalia sees this agreement as a violation of its territorial integrity.
Despite regional challenges, both leaders committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation in various areas, including trade, investment, agriculture, tourism, health, fisheries and transport
Abiy’s visit marks his first official trip to Nairobi since 2018. It signifies an effort to improve relations between the two East African nations. During his visit, he was received with unprecedented protocol by President Ruto, highlighting a potential turning point in their bilateral relationship.
