Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a meeting aimed at advancing peace efforts in the war-torn Tigray region, the president of the Interim Administration, Getachew Reda, met with high-ranking US officials in Addis Ababa today.
The discussions, described as “good” by President Reda, focused on the full and swift implementation of the Pretoria Agreement, a peace deal signed in November 2023 between the Ethiopian federal government and Tigrayan rebels.
The meeting attendees include President Getachew Reda, US State Department Officer for African Affairs Molly Fee, US Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa,Ambassador Mike Hammer, and US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ambassador Masinga.
The Tigray conflict, which began in November 2020, has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions displaced. The Pretoria Agreement, brokered by the African Union, offered a glimmer of hope by outlining a ceasefire, disarmament process, and humanitarian access.
However, concerns remain regarding the slow pace of implementation and continued reports of human rights abuses.
President Getachew emphasized Tigray’s commitment to working closely with the US and other stakeholders to address the challenges facing the region and achieve lasting peace.
While today’s meeting is a positive step, sustained efforts are required to translate words into action on the ground. The full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and an end to hostilities in Tigray remain crucial for lasting peace and stability in Ethiopia
