Addis Ababa, Etiopia – Oromia regional president, Ato Shimelis Abdisa, announced today that urban agriculture has become a central focus for the regional government. In a social media post, Abdisa highlighted the active participation of many Oromia cities in irrigated wheat farming, citing Sheger city’s ambitious plan to cultivate 60,000 hectares and produce 2.4 million quintals of wheat.
This initiative, according to Abdisa, goes beyond food production. It aims to transform cities from consumers to producers, fostering self-sufficiency and economic growth. Additionally, he emphasized the potential for urban agriculture to contribute to the broader agricultural sector’s modernization. By adopting new technologies and maximizing output from limited land, cities can serve as models for improved farming practices across the region.
Governor Abdisa’s announcement underscores the growing importance of urban agriculture in Ethiopia’s development strategy. With rapid urbanization placing pressure on food security and land resources, innovative solutions like these offer promising avenues for sustainable food production and economic empowerment
