Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – February 12, 2024 – Morocco is stepping up efforts to broaden its investment footprint in Ethiopia, with sights set beyond the ongoing fertilizer factory project and into sectors like agriculture, sports, and industry.
Ambassador Nizha Alwi Mohammadi, Morocco’s envoy to Ethiopia, highlighted the growing partnership between the two nations, citing a 2024 legal framework agreement and recent discussions with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Ambassador Taye Atsikselase.
“We are committed to strengthening our participation in various investment fields, particularly agriculture,” Ambassador Mohammadi declared. He acknowledged that historical ties haven’t translated fully into desired trade and investment levels, but expressed optimism about changing that.
The existing agreement between Moroccan fertilizer giant OCP and the Ethiopian government for a factory in Dire Dawa serves as a springboard. However, Morocco seeks to expand its fertilizer production involvement and venture into areas like agricultural processing.
Ambassador Mohammadi emphasized the role of the Moroccan Embassy in facilitating investor engagement in Ethiopia. He stressed the promising future of the partnership, driven by a shared desire to build a strong strategic alliance.
Recognizing the African Union’s designation of 2024 as the Year of Education, Ambassador Mohammadi noted the encouraging educational ties between the two countries. Morocco offers free educational opportunities to Ethiopian students across various disciplines.
