MOGADISHU, Somalia – Authorities in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu have imposed a ban on face masks, citing security concerns and their use by criminals to conceal their identities. The move has sparked debate amid ongoing struggles with terrorist attacks and other criminal activities.
“The use of face and nose masks has been banned because criminals are using them to hide their identity and commit illegal acts,” said Salh Dire, spokesperson for the Mogadishu administration.

The ban, implemented following a high-level security meeting, also prohibits hats and weapons on public transport. It exempts, however, the traditional caps worn by religious elders.

This decision comes as Somalia grapples with long-standing instability, largely attributed to the militant group al-Shabaab. Despite a recent offensive against the group by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration, al-Shabaab continues attacks, including a deadly assault on a military camp last week.

Proponents of the ban argue it will aid in identifying criminals and deter crime. However, critics raise concerns about potential infringement on personal freedoms and stigmatization of mask-wearing individuals, particularly healthcare workers.
The effectiveness of the ban and its impact on security and individual rights remain to be seen. It highlights the complex challenges Somalia faces in balancing safety with personal liberties amid ongoing security threats.
