Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Mike Hammer: is scheduled to depart to Addis Ababa today for a one-week visit.
According to a statement released by the US Department of State, Hammer’s visit will take place from March 7 to March 15, 2024. During his stay, he will participate in a meeting organized by the African Union to discuss the implementation of the Pretoria agreement, a peace deal reached between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
While no recent fighting has been reported, the statement acknowledges the significant work required to achieve lasting peace. Hammer emphasizes the importance of a credible transitional justice process and facilitating the safe and swift return of displaced citizens to their homes.
The statement also highlights Hammer’s call for the Ethiopian government to address conflicts in the Amhara and Oromia regions through dialogue. He is also expected to discuss regional issues with Ethiopian officials.
Hammer’s visit will also include consultations with representatives of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and international partner organizations. Following his stay in Ethiopia, he is scheduled to travel to London and Rome
