Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Israeli military reported intercepting a missile fired from the Red Sea early this morning. Officials identified the port city of Eilat as the intended target, prompting warnings for residents to seek shelter.
The missile was successfully shot down before entering Israeli airspace, according to a military statement. Details regarding the missile type and launch location remain undisclosed.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, known for launching missile and drone attacks on Eilat in recent years, haven’t taken responsibility for this incident. This comes amidst their ongoing calls for Israel to cease offensive actions in Gaza.
Despite facing over 400 airstrikes from the US and Britain, the Houthis, allegedly backed by Iran, continue to challenge Israel and its allies. This week alone, they heavily damaged a British vessel and downed an American drone.
Citing “Israel’s occupation” of Gaza, the Houthis threaten further attacks on Israeli-affiliated ships in the Red Sea unless Tel Aviv changes its course. However, the US State Department condemned their actions as “reckless and senseless to the Palestinians.”
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, highlighted the disruption of humanitarian aid deliveries to Ethiopia, Yemen, and Sudan due to the Houthi attack. Moreover, The Associated Press reports that the US will continue targeting Houthi positions in Yemen.
