New York, NY – The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), a UN-accredited NGO led by Chairwoman Hyun Sook Yoon, actively participated in the 68th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) held last month at UN Headquarters in New York.
During CSW68, IWPG focused on strengthening peace partnerships with various governments.
IWPG met with Ugandan and Ivorian officials to discuss specific avenues for collaboration on peace initiatives. These meetings resulted in five-year national roadmaps for both countries, with commitments to incorporate IWPG’s peace projects into national plans.
- IWPG advocated for the adoption of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) as international law, gaining the support of the Sudanese Chief Secretary.
IWPG representatives also took the opportunity to promote its peace initiatives to a wider audience:
IWPG visited 88 UN Permanent Missions, meeting with 123 high-level officials to discuss initiatives like the DPCW, the International Loving-Peace Art Competition, and Peace Lecturer Training Education (PLTE).
IWPG hosted an NGO Parallel Event titled “Solidarity of Women: Mitigating Gender Inequality through Peace” at Church Center UN. This event explored the connections between peace, gender equality, and women’s solidarity.
IWPG’s participation in CSW68 underscores its dedication to achieving gender equality and sustainable peace.
“IWPG will continue to act upon its commitments with national governments and NGOs to establish itself as a leading international organization for peace,” stated IWPG Secretary General Na Hyung Jun.
The CSW is a functional committee under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It convenes annually to discuss policies on women’s empowerment and protection and identify effective strategies for implementing gender equality measures.
The theme for CSW68 was “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
