Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The TPLF Assembly is on a perilous course due to its hijacking by a dominant power faction. The chairman of the organization’s control commission has warned that the upcoming 14th conference has been subverted by this force and is heading towards a dangerous outcome.
The TPLF is embroiled in a leadership crisis, according to its own control commission. Chairman Tekhlebarhan Araya alleges that the upcoming 14th conference has been hijacked by a dominant faction within the party, leading to a dangerous situation. The commission claims preparations for the conference have been obstructed by “groups grown up in the central committee.”
Araya described the party as plagued by internal divisions, power struggles, and a focus on personal gain over collective interests. He accused the leadership of creating a system of patronage and corruption that has undermined the party’s core principles.
Legal Status and Political Implications
The TPLF’s ability to hold a conference is complicated by its legal status. The party was previously designated a terrorist organization and its legal recognition revoked. While it has regained control of Tigray following the Pretoria Peace Accord, its legal status remains uncertain.
The party has requested re-registration as a political party but faces opposition from the federal government. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has warned that holding a conference without legal recognition could have serious consequences, including the potential for renewed conflict.
The TPLF maintains that it seeks to restore its previous legal status rather than registering as a new party.
