Debre Berhan, Ethiopia – Internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled violence in Oromia region have begun returning to their homes, marking a potential turning point in the ongoing conflict. The first wave of returnees, estimated at around 800 families, left Debre Berhan city on Sunday, February 10th, and reportedly reached their villages in East Welega and West Showa zones on Monday.

Returnees described being placed in temporary shelters while authorities assess the situation and prepare their former homes. While some expressed optimism about eventually returning to their land, others voiced concerns about the lack of clear information regarding their future and the sustainability of their current situation.

While the news report states that the returns were voluntary, it’s crucial to remember that the reasons behind individuals’ decisions to return are complex and may involve various factors, including changing security dynamics, limited resources in displacement camps, and a desire to rebuild their lives in their communities.

The situation in Oromia remains fluid, and it’s important to monitor the return process closely to ensure the safety and well-being of IDPs. Continued humanitarian assistance and support for reintegration efforts will be crucial to ensure a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the displacement crisis
