Kampala, Uganda – The African Union, European Union, and United States issued a joint statement on January 18, 2024, calling for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue in Sudan, and a resolution to the escalating tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia.
Representatives from these organizations met in Kampala, Uganda, following a regional summit and expressed grave concerns about the ongoing conflicts in the Horn of Africa. They warned that these issues pose a significant threat to regional stability.
The statement specifically addressed the ongoing conflict in Sudan, urging all warring parties to cease hostilities and engage in constructive dialogue. This follows months of renewed fighting between the military and rebel groups, displacing thousands and exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.
The statement also highlighted the rising tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, sparked by a recent agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia’s breakaway region, Somaliland. Somalia considers Somaliland its territory and views the agreement as a violation of its sovereignty. This disagreement has led to diplomatic clashes and border skirmishes.
The joint statement emphasizes the need for a collective regional response to address these challenges. The AU, EU, and US are urging all parties involved to prioritize peaceful solutions and work towards long-term stability in the Horn of Africa
