Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Jimma University Specialized Hospital, a critical healthcare center serving over 20 million people in western Ethiopia and neighboring regions, is facing a crippling funding shortage. This crisis has forced the hospital to cut vital services, leaving patients struggling to receive adequate care.
Hospital staff, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed to The Reporter that budget constraints have resulted in the suspension of several key services. The lack of resources has also impacted staff, with many medical professionals not receiving their stipends for months
This funding drought has had a devastating impact on patients. Tragically, some have died due to the lack of essential medical services. The inability to afford necessary medications and the shortage of essential equipment further exacerbates the crisis, particularly for low-income patients who cannot seek care elsewhere.
Dr. Jamal Abafita, president of Jimma University, emphasized the urgency of the situation. He highlighted the distinct role of the hospital as a specialized teaching institution and called upon the Ministry of Health to bolster medical infrastructure independent of university hospitals. Dr. Abafita stressed the need for immediate interventions to address the lack of medical supplies, oxygen shortages, and overcrowding that are jeopardizing patient care.
Despite ongoing efforts to expand facilities, Jimma University Hospital remains overwhelmed. The critical shortage of funding threatens the well-being of millions who depend on this essential healthcare provider.
