Mekelle, Ethiopia – While the world recently observed International Fistula Eradication Day, the fight continues to ensure the well-being of women living with this debilitating condition in Tigray.
Fistula, often caused by obstructed childbirth, can lead to incontinence and social isolation. However, the impact goes far deeper, with Dr. Melaku Abreha, Director of Hamlin Fistula Mekelle, highlighting the significant risk of psychological distress for these women.
The emotional burden of fistula manifests as feelings of shame, depression, and anxiety. This year’s campaign emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses not just the physical but also the mental health challenges faced by women with fistula.
According to regional media DW, he said that to prevent this suffering in the first place, “we must work towards delaying child marriage, empowering women through education, and ensuring access to quality maternal healthcare. Early intervention and proper treatment can offer a path to healing, both physically and emotionally”.
