Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The European Union expressed strong support for the people of Ethiopia facing multiple crises at a pledging conference held in Geneva. High Representative Josep Borrell and Commissioner Janez Lenarčič committed €42 million in humanitarian assistance for 2024.
Ethiopia continues to grapple with conflicts, extreme weather events, diseases, and economic hardship. The EU called for the full implementation of the peace agreement in the northern regions and a resolution to allow displaced people to return home.
The statement also raised concerns about ongoing violence and human rights abuses in other parts of Ethiopia. The EU urged all parties involved to respect international law, protect civilians, and pursue peace through dialogue.
The EU pledged to continue supporting vulnerable populations and called for a significant increase in humanitarian aid. They emphasized the need for long-term solutions for internally displaced persons, including safe and voluntary return options.
While acknowledging the Ethiopian government’s role in addressing these challenges, the EU encouraged reforms to ensure aid reaches those in need. This follows reports of aid diversion last year. The statement also highlighted the importance of independent humanitarian information and needs-based assistance.
