Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia – Ethiopia’s Government Communication Service (GCS) expressed concern about recent developments in the Tigray region bordering Amhara.
Minister Dr. Leges Tulu stated that a “trend” observed in the area violates the Pretoria Agreement, a peace deal that ended the war in northern Ethiopia.
Dr. Tulu did not specify the exact nature of the violation but emphasized that resorting to force would cause “another round of suffering” for the people of Tigray.
The Minister highlighted the federal government’s efforts to maintain peace and uphold the rights of the Tigray people as outlined in the Pretoria Agreement.
He criticized the approach of enforcing borders through force, calling it a failure to learn from past mistakes.
Dr. Tulu urged both Amhara and Tigray to prioritize dialogue and negotiation to resolve any disputes over boundaries and identity. He also emphasized the importance of dismantling “illegal arms trafficking networks” established by “extremist and anti-peace forces” in the region.
The statement underscores the fragility of peace in northern Ethiopia and the Ethiopian government’s commitment to a peaceful resolution through dialogue and cooperation.
