The Ethiopian Ministry of Tourism is gearing up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Lucy, a key fossil in understanding human evolution. Through a year-long program of events and tours, the Ministry aims to leverage this significant anniversary to promote Ethiopia’s diverse tourism resources to the world.

Commemorating a Milestone, Lucy, a 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis fossil, was unearthed in Ethiopia’s Afar region in 1974. This remarkable discovery played a crucial role in shaping our understanding of human origins and continues to attract scientists and researchers from around the globe.
The Ministry of Tourism sees this anniversary as an opportunity to showcase Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. A series of events are planned, including, international conferences featuring renowned scientists and researchers, exhibitions and educational programs at the National Museum, tours to the Afar region, including the site where Lucy was found, and evelopment of new tourism infrastructure and destinations.

Experts and visitors, including Professor Donald Johanson, the researcher who discovered Lucy, have already begun arriving in Ethiopia to participate in the celebrations.

Collaborations with stakeholders like Arizona State University’s Institute of Human Origins and local communities are crucial to the program’s success.
While Lucy takes center stage, the Ministry emphasizes that promoting Ethiopia’s diverse tourism offerings remains a central goal. This includes historical sites, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultural experiences.

The 50th anniversary commemoration officially began with the visit of over 20 human origins research experts. Events will continue throughout 2024, culminating in November with a symposium and photo exhibition.

This strategic initiative signifies Ethiopia’s commitment to leveraging its unique heritage and fostering sustainable tourism growth
