Ethiopia Falls Short of Export Target in First Half of 2016 Ethiopian Fiscal Year, Government Seeks Collaboration with Exporters

 The Ethiopian government announced today that it earned 1.53 billion USD from exports in the first half of the 2016 fiscal year, falling short of the planned target of 2.39 billion USD.

 This represents a 63.6% achievement of the goal set for the six-month period.
Coffee, Flowers, and Pulses Lead the Way: Despite the shortfall, some sectors performed well.

 Coffee remained the top export earner, generating 571.47 million USD, followed by flowers at 225.64 million USD and pulses at 175.87 million USD. Oilseeds brought in 109.68 million USD and khat contributed 89.61 million USD.

The Ministry of Trade and Regional Relations met with exporters to discuss the performance and identify areas for improvement. 

Exporters raised concerns about product quality issues, access to loans, illegal activities, and pricing mechanisms. The ministry addressed these concerns and emphasized the importance of collaboration to enhance efficiency.

 Ato Kasahun Gofe, Minister of State for Trade Relations and Export Promotion, urged exporters to work with the government to improve efficiency by focusing on product quality, contract adherence, timely deliveries, and accurate financial reporting.

!Whiled the first half results fell short of expectation’s , the government and exporters are committed to working together to address challenges and boost export performance in the remaining months of the fiscal year.
