Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie addressed the opening session of the 44th African Union Executive Council yesterday, applauding the Summit’s theme of “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century” and calling for increased access and inclusivity in education across the continent.
Minister Taye emphasized the theme’s resonance with “our Peoples’ quest for progress and development,” highlighting the urgent need for resilient education systems and quality education for all children. He noted Ethiopia’s own prioritization of education, including nationwide school feeding programs reaching over six million students and expansion of public boarding schools and remote learning centers.
In a significant move, the Minister also proposed making Amharic an official language of the African Union. He argued that this would “empower indigenous African languages” and “honor Africa’s linguistic diversity,” strengthening the continent’s collective identity.
The 37th AU Summit is expected to focus on education, climate change, and security challenges facing the continent. With Ethiopia’s call for Amharic language inclusion adding to the agenda, the Summit promises to be a pivotal moment for shaping Africa’s future.
