Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian Refugee and Returnee Service (ERRS) has begun issuing digital identification cards (IDs) to refugees in collaboration with the National ID Project and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing access to essential services and improving the overall well-being of refugees in Ethiopia.
The digital IDs will not only enable refugees to access vital services more efficiently, including healthcare, education, and financial services but the new system allows for integrated and standardized refugee data across institutions, facilitating faster and more efficient service delivery.
It is said that this program underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to upholding the rights of refugees and fostering their inclusion within the national system and Ethiopia becomes the first country in East Africa to integrate refugees into its national digital ID system, setting a positive example for the region.
Tayba Hassan, Director General of ERRS emphasizes that the Ethiopian government is committed to ensuring the full respect of refugee rights. This digital ID program will facilitate their inclusion within the national system.”
Yodahe Zemikael, General Manager of the National ID Project on his behalf stated “Providing refugees with digital IDs will empower them to access necessary services, while also enabling efficient information sharing between institutions.”
Whereas Andrew Mbogori, UNHCR Representative in Ethiopia , “Ethiopia’s inclusion of refugees in their national digital ID system sets a strong example for respecting refugee rights at the international level.”
This initiative represents a positive step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for refugees in Ethiopia.
