Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Education officials in Amhara region’s East Gojam zone announced the reopening of 38 schools following a period of closure due to security concerns.
The zone’s education department reached this decision after consultations with parents, teachers, students, local leaders, and stakeholders.
Teaching resumed in 33 primary and 5 secondary schools across 10 districts and cities within the zone.
This initiative follows efforts in the past two weeks to restart education in all districts. During this period, 17 primary and 2 secondary schools located primarily in urban areas successfully resumed classes.
The education department is now focusing on reopening schools in rural areas.
Last month, East Gojam’s chief administrator, Nurlani Berhanu, reported that over 500,000 students in the zone were unable to attend school due to the ongoing conflict.
The resumption of classes in these 38 schools signifies a positive step towards restoring normalcy in the region’s education system.
