Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a gesture of solidarity, Brazil stepped up to support Ethiopian refugees grappling with food insecurity today. During her visit for the African Union Summit, First Lady Janja Lula da Silva announced a crucial donation of 18 tons of food supplies and 65 water filters.
This timely aid, delivered to five refugee camps in Gambella, will provide much-needed relief to 385,000 refugees, primarily from South Sudan and neighboring countries facing conflict and social unrest. Gambella, Ethiopia’s largest refugee hosting region, bears the brunt of this humanitarian crisis.
The donated water filters boast a combined capacity of purifying 5,600 liters of water daily, ensuring access to clean drinking water, a critical factor in preventing disease outbreaks and maintaining overall health.
According to a press release from the UN Refugee Agency, the First Lady’s contribution will directly benefit refugees from Sudan and South Sudan seeking refuge in Ethiopia due to ongoing conflicts and social difficulties.
This act of generosity from Brazil highlights the international community’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations struggling with displacement and its associated challenges. The donated food and water will provide vital sustenance and sanitation, offering a glimmer of hope and stability to those in dire need.
