Oromia, Ethiopia – Bate Urgessa, a prominent political officer for the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), an opposition party, was shot dead last night in Meki town, East Shoa zone of the Oromia region. Investigators are working to determine the cause of death.
Urgessa’s killing comes amid heightened tensions between the OLF and the Ethiopian government. He had been previously detained by authorities and his family alleges he was denied access to medical treatment for Hepatitis B while in custody.
The specific details of Urgessa’s role within the OLF are still emerging, but his death marks a significant development in Ethiopia’s political landscape.
Ethiopian authorities have yet to release information regarding Urgessa’s age, hometown, or specific accomplishments within the OLF.
Urgessa’s family members have come forward alleging he was denied access to medication for Hepatitis B during a prior detention.
In February, several OLF members, including Urgessa, were reportedly hospitalized after undertaking a hunger strike.
The OLF accuses the government of torturing its members and failing to address their deteriorating health conditions.
Family members of the detainees have been denied visitation rights.
The motive behind Urgessa’s shooting remains unclear. The Ethiopian government has not issued a statement regarding the incident. The full extent of Urgessa’s health condition before his death is unknown.
