Addis Abab, Ethiopia – In a swift and decisive operation, the Joint Security and Safety Task Force thwarted a potential eruption of violence in Addis Ababa and neighboring regions. The operation, conducted on Wednesday, resulted in the apprehension of 50 suspects believed to be part of a well-organized plot.
Authorities uncovered a group, established in November 2016, with the alleged intention of sowing discord in the Amhara region and unleashing violence upon Addis Ababa.
This group, meticulously planned to establish a foothold in both Addis Ababa and Menjar Shenkora (Amhara) before turning their destructive focus towards the bordering Oromia region.
Investigations revealed a concerning tactic employed by the group.
They reportedly infiltrated religious institutions, aiming to create a seemingly favorable environment for their activities. Security forces discovered the group actively recruiting members and organizing logistics throughout the Amhara region.
Furthermore, the task force identified a network linking them with external “anti-peace forces.”
Sintayohu Ngatu Gebreyesus, operating under the alias Abraham, was identified as the leader of the group.
The task force also revealed key figures within the organization responsible for finance Fasil Getachew and logistics Tewolde Birhan.
The investigation further implicated individuals based outside of Ethiopia, including Shi Boss Dawit Woldegiorgis Mesay Mekonev, and Habtamu Ayalew.
In the wake of this operation, the Joint Security and Safety Task Force issued a public call to action.Â
They urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The task force emphasized the importance of continued cooperation with security agencies in maintaining peace and order.
They highlighted the government’s ongoing peace initiatives as a viable alternative to the path of violence. A direct message was delivered to those potentially involved, urging them to abandon their destructive actions and embrace the government’s peace offerings.
The successful operation showcased the coordinated efforts of various security agencies.Â
The National Defense Army, National Intelligence and Security Service, Information Network Security Administration, Ethiopian Federal Police, Addis Ababa Police, and Oromia Regional Police all played vital roles in dismantling the plot.
The task force expressed their gratitude to the community for their unwavering support and assured them of continued vigilance against any forces seeking to disrupt the nation’s peace.
