Addis Abab, Ethiopia -The Ashegoda Wind Power Station, a vital contributor to Ethiopia’s clean energy sector, is poised for a comeback after a three-year absence.
The station was forced offline due to the conflict in the Tigray region. However, recent announcements from Ethiopian Electric Power indicate that electricity generation will resume soon.
Renewing Clean Energy Production
The war inflicted damage on the wind turbines, affecting critical components like batteries, control units, and lubricants.
Fortunately, ongoing maintenance efforts have yielded positive results.
The station is already generating an average of 24.4 megawatts, a promising sign for its return to full capacity.
Technical Details and Future Expansion
Ashegoda Wind Power Station boasts a unique wind turbine setup, featuring a combination of 54 three-bladed and 30 two-bladed turbines. Currently, efforts are underway to bring an additional five three-bladed turbines online, further bolstering the station’s overall generation capacity.
With a potential output of 120 megawatts, the station’s return will significantly contribute to Ethiopia’s clean energy goals.
The Ashegoda Wind Power Station’s revival marks a significant milestone for Ethiopia. It signifies the nation’s commitment to renewable energy sources and paves the way for a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix for the future.
