Africa faces a multitude of security challenges, including terrorism, extremism, unconstitutional changes of government, and cross-border crime, according to African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye.

Speaking at the 37th African Union Summit, Adeoye highlighted the critical nature of these issues, emphasizing the increasing frequency of their occurrence.

He condemned unconstitutional power grabs, stating that six countries have been suspended from the Union for violating democratic principles. However, he acknowledged the need to support political transitions in these nations to restore stability and respect for human rights.

Adeoye stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and fostering dialogue as key pillars for achieving lasting peace in Africa. He reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to supporting democratic transitions and peaceful conflict resolution, while reiterating its stance against illegal activities.

He addressed specific situations, urging warring factions in Sudan to lay down arms and embrace dialogue. Similarly, he advocated for a peaceful resolution to the dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Peacebuilding initiatives through inclusive participation were presented as a central focus for the Union. Adeoye emphasized the crucial role of African leaders in spearheading these efforts and highlighted the importance of good governance and democracy for sustainable development across the continent.
