The African Union (AU) Executive Council convened its 22nd Extraordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday, March 15, 2024. This critical meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming election of the AU’s senior leadership, scheduled for February 2025.


The session reviewed a comprehensive report by the Permanent Representative Committee of the AU on the ongoing preparations for this important election.


Foreign Minister of Mauritania and Chairperson of the Executive Council, Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould, highlighted the significance of the forthcoming election in his opening remarks.


Ethiopian Foreign Minister, H.E. Amb. Taye Atske-Selassie, emphasized the need for a transparent and efficient election process that upholds the AU’s integrity and established principles. He also stressed the importance of maintaining unity among African nations to ensure the continent’s continued cohesion and a strengthened Commission.


This gathering marks a vital step towards solidifying Africa’s role on the global stage and paving the way for a stable and prosperous future for the continent.
