Mexico City, Mexico – Mexican authorities report a surge in African migrants seeking to cross their territory towards the United States, with numbers increasing ninefold compared to the previous year.
Data from the Ministry of the Interior reveals a jump from 6,500 African migrants arriving in Mexico in 2022 to an estimated 60,000 in 2023. These individuals primarily originate from countries like Senegal, Nigeria, and Angola, according to Dana Graeber Ladeck, head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Mexico.
Ladeck told the BBC that the migrants embark on perilous journeys, often paying smugglers between $10,000 and $20,000 to reach Mexico. Their ultimate goal is to reach the US border and seek asylum or other opportunities.
This development adds another layer to the complex migration situation at the US-Mexico border, which has seen record numbers of people attempting to cross in recent months. While Central and South American migrants traditionally make up the majority, the growing influx of Africans highlights a diversifying demographic seeking entry into the United States.
The reasons behind this rise in African migration are multifaceted, including conflict, economic hardship, and climate change in their home countries. Mexico serves as a transit point for these individuals, who face numerous dangers and challenges.
