Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – President Sahlework Zewde of Ethiopia urged African leaders to prioritize a faster digital transition during a discussion on “Digitalization for Africa’s Transformation” held at the Adwa Victory Memorial Pan-African Hall.
Emphasizing the “irreplaceable role” of technology in unlocking Africa’s potential, President Zewde highlighted the benefits of digitalization in addressing challenges and driving progress. He stressed its crucial role in achieving the vision of a prosperous Africa by 2063, outlined in the Agenda 2063 of the African Union.
President Zewde pointed to Ethiopia’s ongoing development of a “Digital 2025 strategy” aligned with continental aspirations. He mentioned initiatives to expand telecom infrastructure, internet access, and artificial intelligence adoption.
While acknowledging the positive impact of digitalization on economic growth, President Zewde cautioned against neglecting potential security risks. He emphasized the need for responsible use of technology.
Echoing President Zewde’s sentiment, other leaders participating in the discussion called for prioritizing investments in preparing the next generation with the necessary technological skills.
The event served as a platform for African leaders to reaffirm their commitment to accelerating the digital transition as a key driver of sustainable development across the continent.
